Vance poured on the charm the way Eddie Haskel would for Mrs. Cleaver.

Expand full comment

OMG You nailed it. It felt creepy to me.

Expand full comment

So creepy but he did the same to Tim. I think that’s a debate tactic to be familiar

Expand full comment

How that kind of phonies is not obvious to so many is beyond me. I think people are willfully duped because they mistakenly think they will get something out of a Trump presidency.

In law school, they teach you to argue with a straight face against the opponent when you have neither the facts nor the law on your side. Because your client is your boss. You don't get disbarred or punished for it but, if the fact finder - judge if no jury, jury if there is a jury - is worth anything, it'll find against your client.

And I get it--we have to do this to ensure everyone gets adequate and fair representation no matter the crime... it is how a just system should work.

YES! Big Eddie Haskell energy! Cheeto needs to watch his back even more.

Expand full comment

Exactly--me thinks Trump may have a little slip and fall should that smarmy duo make it to the White House.

Expand full comment

Terrifying Thought!

Expand full comment

Isn't it--can you imagine what Vance would do after Trump has a timely "accident"... Vance may be the REAL antichrist is such a thing existed.

Here’s to you Mrs Robinson 😁

Expand full comment

Are you trying to seduce me, Mrs. Robinson?

Don’t make this weird, JD.

Expand full comment

Ahahahahhahaha ya'll ain't right!

Expand full comment

😂😂😂

Expand full comment

I am suddenly nauseous.

Expand full comment

🤣 Well put! He’s so smarmy!

Expand full comment

But people buy into this kind of mess--it is maddening.

Expand full comment

Maga people, and the incel- friendly right wing weirdos he hangs out with online, think he’s killing it as the vice presidential candidate, but normal people find Vance repellent.

Expand full comment

Exactly, what Bizzaro World do they exist in where a candidate that hovers between 9 - 11 % approval rating and garners small crowds is crushing it?

Expand full comment

Right on target.

TYSM :-)

Agreed, Alicia, I appreciated Walz's sincere, studied approach, which is aligned with Kamala's. He did what many were saying was impossible: he proved that giving actual "wonky" answers of substance to the questions can still win the debate. Harris-Walz are bringing real leadership respecting voter intelligence back to politics. Amazing!!

Expand full comment

Co-signed. I loved the Palmer recaps and assessments too. will you be writing one as well?

Expand full comment

Walz did exactly what he needed to do : show he is who he appears to be.

That’s the win.

Expand full comment

Exactly--Vance felt plastic and phony.

Expand full comment

Well, Walz succeeded in getting me blocked from at least one of my former acquaintances… thanks, Tim! You rock, btw…

Expand full comment

Oh noes--what happened if you don't mind me asking?

Expand full comment

Well, really just someone I’ve known for close to 40 years, tried to tell me she was undecided when in reality she’s gonna vote for Trump. She just can’t tell me. And actually that’s fine. The latest was that she said that project 2025 was endorsed by Kamala Harris, and that was true because it landed in her inbox and she saw it on the news… so right after the debate, she just went bonkers and said a bunch of mean stuff, accusing me of things I never said, and that she was blocking me. Awesome, I said.

Expand full comment

Wow--MAGA folks really do live in their own fantasy world don't they?

Expand full comment

If I lived in a fantasy world it would be all sunshine, kittens and rose petals, maybe even unicorns! but Project 2025? how depressing ☀️🍭🌈

Tim Walz won handily! I appreciate honesty, facts, candor, pragmatism, real-world solutions to real-world problems! I'm firmly in support of Harris/Walz!!! Hooray!!! 💙💙

JD Vance reminded me of the slick-talking smarmy Southern Baptist creeps I grew up around. In more that a few of his "answers" besides lying he did the abusive tactics of negging, gaslighting and DARVO- sometimes all 3 tactics within minutes. He also reminded me of the magic 8 ball toy I had as a kid: repetitive, nonsensical, vague non-answers that could be applied to anything. But he did his magic 8 ball non-answers in the Baptist way.

Yuck!!

best debate analysis so far, Sue, thanks!💙🇺🇲🌊

Expand full comment

She always has a way of just nailing it in the most succinct and easy-to-digest way possible.

The civility of the debate was honestly refreshing. Moments where they agreed on things and even some levity were genuinely surprising.

Vance did a much better job at pretending to be human here than I expected. I’ll give him that much credit.

There were some missed opportunities for Walz though. When questioned about the hurricane and climate change I thought that was such an easy segue to talk about how Republicans voted against the infrastructure bill that included flood mitigation and the fact that Project 2025 would gut NOAA.

But the longer the debate went on, the more it favored Walz. Vance getting fact checked, the topic of abortion and what I think is the soon to be infamous “non-answer” to the “did Trump lose the last election” question were the final nails in his coffin.

I need Xanax and sleep.

LOL , I feel you--have a good rest, for tomorrow, we soldier on!

Just want to give Alicia a shout out as my comment to this piece turned out to be the seed for my own commentary on last night, which I have now posted. 🙂

Expand full comment

Aww thanks, Lee, I am gonna go check it out now!

Expand full comment

I hope you're right.

I am trying to imagine this debate through the eyes of an undecided voter. IMO for someone to be undecided at this point speaks to a profound lack of observational and critical thinking skills. Put whatever policy gloss you want on it, still undecideds are dumb people, and I'm not convinced that dumb people saw Walz deliver an ass whuppin to Vance, who mostly managed to sound considerably less crazy than his running mate does.

Expand full comment

Indeed, he had an extremely incredibly low bar to leap across, and people grade Republican politics on a curve. If they don't sound like they escaped a mental institution they get high marks, meanwhile Dems have to walk on water and turn water into wine...

Expand full comment

The double standard is really breathtaking, isn't it?

Expand full comment

Pisses me off to no end. I think it is because we tend to want to improve people's lives and point out disparities in need of fixing--they disparage us as being woke SJWs so they look for any chink in the armor no matter how small to dismiss all valid concerns...

Expand full comment

No matter what Vance did or said. Trump is the top of the ticket and that can’t happen. America knows it.

Expand full comment

oh 100 percent!

Expand full comment

Walz didn’t look good on the Hong Kong matter but he dealt with by saying his mouth runs ahead of his brain on occasion,

Expand full comment

Indeed--and eh has already admitted he is not good a the debate stuff--even so he held his own and beat Vance's behind!

Expand full comment

In PR disaster the Tuinol poisoning is the model of how to respond. Get in early, acknowledge the fault loudly and often. The moderator did him a pick favour. He has drawn the sting in the least obtrusive way possible.

Expand full comment

Yup own it. Vance counld’t own so many transgressions.

Expand full comment

I just love the indignant expression on Walz’s face when Justa Dick Vance just outright lied.

Expand full comment

I’ve been using that same moniker🤣

Expand full comment

Vance is Professor Harold Hill and Springfield Ohio is his River City

Expand full comment

Not an appropriate metaphor. Vance will never be turned around & Springfield will not be won over.

Expand full comment

True. I just couldn’t stop seeing him as a flim-flam man!

Expand full comment

That he is.

Expand full comment

X-=D!!

Expand full comment

Oh, but at least Harold Hill was redeemed in the end. I don't see the same for Justa Dick.

Expand full comment

Yes it’s in his “Trouble in River City” phase

The Springfield bit didn’t work out so well for Jaydee, but I wish Tim had pushed him a little more about inventing stories to push an agenda, and at the expense of his own constituents. I see that as a missed opportunity.

Yes, Jaydee is indeed a slick liar.

Expand full comment

Indeed--but given more time I think Walz would have been a little more polished--still, for being a relative Noob, he did all right.

Expand full comment

If I were Waltz, I would have lead with the fact that Vance, and Trump just had charges filed against them in Springfield, OH for the damage, bomb threats, school, and government building lockdowns that have occurred due to their false cat & dog eating rhetoric. 😎

Expand full comment

Oh yas, that would have been epic!

Expand full comment

Right? Boom! 🎤 Right out the gate. ✊🇺🇸😎

Expand full comment

It is my fervent hope that no one falls for Vance's practiced slickness...

Expand full comment

Honestly couldn’t watch past the first 15 minutes. I just wanted to take a lipstick and draw all over Vance’s smug face with it. I will get on YouTube & fast forward to the 30 minute mark to watch from there to the end tomorrow.

Expand full comment

LOL I love the picture you painted of drawing all over Vance's smug face with lipstick. I'd pay to see that!

Expand full comment

…and I would pay a women focused charity for the opportunity to do it.

Expand full comment

Yeah that was tough. But he’s so fake I just let it go. They were more fair on letting Tim reply. Once Vance would not stop talking and it was obvious.

Walz won hand down. Vance couldn’t own anything.

Expand full comment

My first impression was based on appearances and the way the candidates presented themselves. I kept wanting Walz to visibly react to Vances lies and evasions. I intentionally was not listening to their responses as much as paying attention to body language. I'm afraid that somebody not too acquainted with JD up until this debate would probably see him in a better light after tonight. (Who knows? He may even break the -40 approval level.) After reading some of the quotes from the debate I feel much better about Walz’s performance. I wish a little more of the Tim Walz we see in interviews and on the campaign trail had come through. The civility on both their parts was amazing. Not the junkyard dogs that veep candidates usually give us. A lot of wagging tails and butt sniffing instead.

Expand full comment

I was kinda glad for that part of it though--bring dignity back to the debate stage.

Expand full comment

I wanted to slap the smirk off of Jethro Dull's face. Walz overall did well. The Jan.6 non answer was coffin nails for Vance. The fact that he wouldn't own up to the result of the 2020 election is disqualifying for Vance and the Shitgibbon.

Expand full comment

Jethro Dull's --

Gotta use that in the future. Yes, I think Walz backslapped him with the 2020 question--loved it!

Expand full comment

I stole that from Stephanie Miller.😀

Vance wouldn’t answer whether Spanky lost the last election, or whether Jan 6 was a violent attempt to change the outcome.

That’s who he is: Spanky’s lapdog

Exactly-- J.D. is so close to power he can taste it, dignity be damned. He knows he would be the one in charge should they win the White House. Besides, what's a little political pegging between friends?
