Please don’t lose hope…you have millions of like-minded people who are STILL going to help you fight the fight. ❤️

We're all gut punched today. And scared. Please take care of yourself... that needs to be a priority.

In my lifetime, I never thought we'd lose our freedoms in America. Here we are. Hang in there...we're all with you, Alicia.

I also thought this was a good piece in The Guardian.

Thanks for the article. The MAGAts will be so surprised that the misery extends to them, won't they? "I didn't think I'd lose MY job/health care/social security." "I didn't think MY friend would get deported." "I didn't think MY wife would die." Welcome to the Fourth Reich, dummies.

Worse: some of them didn't care as long as they got to hurt others with their vote.

Yes, Alicia, it is more than okay to be angry now. It is highly desirable because we must resist this authoritarian takeover with all our might. The Resistance begins!

I think the fix was in and somehow this was rigged. I don’t know how but the numbers don’t add up and there’s no logic to this outcome. Allan Lichtman, Nate Silver, Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Beyoncé, women, rally attendance, the Obamas, policies, voter turnout, race called in 12 hours when we were told it would take days, Republicans endorsing Harris, vance versus Walz, more registered democrats than republicans- 45 million vs 36 million) COVID response, gifting Putin a testing machine, calling Latinos trash, 2020 numbers vs 2024 numbers…. I can think of more. Arlington Cemetery, calling military suckers and losers, and again 45 million democrats against 36 million republicans, project 2025… Just no. A small majority would be believable- this is absurd and I’m not going to swallow it. Harris shouldn’t concede and this election needs to be scrutinized.

In 2020, we didn’t know the result for 4 days after the election. But this time Trump gained almost everywhere and Kamala didn’t measure up to Biden’s numbers. For me, I resent the fact that a convicted felon (days away from sentencing, now) was even allowed to run. The DOJ and Merrick Garland are an abject failure and disgrace. My question now is what can Biden do in these last months?

That’s one of my questions too. If he has immunity for presidential acts then he should presidentially make trumpf a political prisoner. Say it’s a presidential act to protect the country. He won’t do anything though. Anyway I believe what dumpty told us. This was the last election.

Unless it wasn’t rigged and our fellow Americans are fools and idiots who signed us all up for the BS to come.

Maybe it's a mixture of both.

Certainly makes me wonder how it was delivered as a done deal so swiftly. I’m living in Scotland and I have so much disappointment about this outcome, I feel it so deeply in my gut, despite never having the opportunity to vote in the election, ever. I don’t have the strength to contemplate the consequences of this decision yet. I’m so sorry for everyone who tried so hard to help others to understand what exactly was at stake. I think the future holds a lot of uncertainty. Stick together and support each other. Xx

Agreed.

Sending you hugs and solidarity from across the Atlantic. We’re scared of this future too, for different reasons. This is going to upset the balance that world politics has been in for decades, and I’m not sure who will catch us this time.

(We really are living in the worst/stupidest timeline, aren’t we?)

I am a white woman who plans to fight like hell for you and for all of us. The pain inflicted on you and your family is so unnecessary. My heart breaks

I’ve lost hope because Project 2025 is the systemic demise of democracy as we know it. No more election has been his battle cry. The Islamic who lead a fight against Kamala will be given a ahh moment when the major deportations take place. For this is all laid out clearly in the 900 page plus document.

Same. I will laugh a bitter laugh when the systemic breakdown begins and all the people in the leopard eating face party are shocked at their face being eaten

Your words echo my thoughts. I am standing with you. Angry white woman who dared to believe we were better than this!

This election was about race and sexism. It is about protecting white privilege and their wealth at all costs. Over 70 million misogynistic bigots agree. His supporters want conformity and order. They think an autocratic will give them that. Buckle up, the fascist shit storm is on the horizon.

I'm sorry you're family experienced that kind of terror.

All intelligent women are angry and sad. I am so very sorry and unhappy that many of my fellow Americans support fascism and toxic Christianity. I don’t know what to do.

Yes, we are not done fighting the cultural racism that is still being spread by media.

I can’t imagine watching my family being beaten.

I grew up in central California in the 70s and saw some of the same, crude racism.

How anyone can support the party that wants to pretend our painful, disgusting history didn’t happen? We still have citizens who want to return to that apartheid system. Never again.

To add: your take that somehow the fix was in resonates. Somehow, they knew it was rigged. That's why they didn't have a ground game and why they felt free to spew their lies and hate in public. How I don't know, but it was rigged.

I want to add to my comment. I've been reading a lot this morning, from Simon Rosenberg to Robert Hubbell to Jay Kuo, and I have come away with the idea that trying to overturn the election because it seems so impossible that we lost everything is ultimately counterproductive.

If we truly believe that our elections are free and fair, then we must accept that Trump's win is legitimate, and any efforts to launch lawsuits or figure out how they "cheated" should never get off the ground.

Instead, we should look at the causes of the loss, such as the failure of the media to show just how good Biden is; the excessive flood of money into our electoral politics; and especially, the fact that most MAGAs still don't feel that anyone cares about them. They are going backwards, and they need a target for their outrage. Trump has done two things: given them the target they seek and told them it's okay to go after that person or group.

We cannot win them back by denigrating them or their choice. Instead, I think we have to do several things.

First, we are entitled to our fury and grief, let us have some time to feel our emotions.

Second, we must protect those who will be at greatest risk.

Third, we have to find a way to alleviate the fears of the MAGAs who have been fed a steady diet of BS and hate and have internalized it. They are going to suffer as much as we are under this awful man, maybe more because they will have to deal not only with the misery he promises, but with the crippling knowledge that their idol is a monster.

We have to protect each other, work hard to save our country, and find a way to share what we know to the be the truth. I think that starts with places like this, where people can share ideas and passions, and unite to fight the oncoming darkness. The legacy media has failed us, but we will also fail if we don't admit the stark reality that Trump won because many people like his ideas.

We have to reignite the real American spirit, not this sham. That will take time, effort, and a realization that blaming people or looking for a rigged election is not the place to start.

I am crying and unable to eat, but I'm still here. And so are you. And you and me is "we," and we will go forward together and save democracy. It will be slow and sometimes dangerous, but we can get it done.

A big hug for you Alicia, and let's decide now to opt out of the blame game, which I initially agreed with, I admit, and move forward.

You said it all. Grieve. Then breathe. Then FOCUS. Self-care first. The simplest things. Focus again, and move forward. If you want my full rant, it should be down below around # 70, lol.

It is good and proper to feel a righteous anger right now.

There's more than a little bit of "we can't say this isn't who we are anymore" out there right now...and there's a point in that. There may well be a majority of Americans who are fascist, fascist-adjacent, or just enablers. It's depressing.

But that isn't who WE are. It's who THEY are (yeah, the ones who are so keen on defining an evil "THEY"...I hate to fall into that, but I've already said this is a time to be angry).

Winston Churchill (who had issues, too, but who doesn't?) once said "We may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."

Your 'stack has entertained, informed and enlightened me for quite a while now, Alicia, and I treasure it. I want to thank you for leading conversations that help me be a better person, see things from other perspectives, and consider deeply how things that are easy for me can be very hard for others. And sometimes just to vent or laugh at it all.

And I hope you will keep leading and inspiring this little community, but I will understand if you can't for a while, or forever. Take care and be well.

I just upgraded to paid because we can't lose you, or each other. I'm old and white, but my heart is in a million pieces this morning. I cannot BELIEVE Americans are so stupid, cruel, sexist and bigoted. I looked at her packed rallies and the joy surrounding her and felt real hope. Now I just don't know what to feel.

Maybe when the economy is in tatters and unemployment is at 25%, thousands of women are dead, Medicare and Social Security have been cut to the bone, and police are beating up people who have the audacity to get in their way, the MAGATs will realize they've made a horrible mistake. We have to wait for that day and be ready to take our country back.

Meanwhile, take care of yourself and let's take care of each other. The Resistance starts now. Please stay safe, Alicia.

On a positive note, I recently learnt this week from that super-smart, osteopathic doctor on Substack, that all of those Jewish folks who died in the 1940's were merely suffering from hitler-Derangement-Syndrome.
