Unconditional love? Nah! Give me Golden Rule Love Instead!
My pre-surgery reflections about stuff
When my intake nurse asked me if I had any directives I wanted to share before gall bladder surgery—well… that made me even more than a little nervous than I already admittedly was. My mind began to race with the numerous stories about people going in for minor surgery and never coming back out.
Uncle Joe went in to get his tonsils removed—wound up with a toe tag.
All things have risks, and although gallbladder surgery is considered outpatient, it is still surgery. Add to this their precautions and delays due to my autoimmune issues, and I am a bit freaked.
Hopeful.
And freaked.
After the question was posed, I started thinking about legacy—as cliche as it sounds, I sincerely hope I leave this world with a legacy of love.
This made me meditate on an idea of love that so many people subscribe to, but from what I have seen, for me, is a concept that keeps relationships in such turmoil: the idea of unconditional love.
As an idea, it is the most destructive, albeit well-intentioned, relationship paradigms out there.
Like, I often hear people say things like, “Animals love unconditionally…” and I wanna scream.
Uhm. No, they don’t.
Beat an elephant; he may turn and rend you to pieces.
Fido the dog—he may bite or kill you if you kick him often enough. And Eight Ball the Cat—let's see what she will do if you refuse to feed her for three days.
All living things have conditions on how they desire to be treated, and these are okay when reasonable.
In the video below, I explain how the idea of unconditional love has hurt so many people and why Golden Rule Love should be, well, the gold standard.
The below video is under three minutes long—one love and hugs, you guys!
Well said! The Golden Rule is what should be going up in classrooms across the Nation, not their version of the 10 Commandments (which none of them abide by anyway) since we truly want a better world for our kids. Wishing you the best surgical outcome, speedy recovery and a fabulous future! 💙
Unconditional love is only from Jesus. 🥰
